Critical repairs serve homeowners and communities by removing safety hazards; preventing fall risks; restoring clean water for hygiene, cooking, and self-care; increasing independence; reducing social isolation; preserving housing stock; and reducing health care and assisted living costs for taxpayers.
“This ramp is a luxury. It gives me freedom.”
When Habitat Repairs completed a new ramp installation for local homeowner Jose, the project didn’t just provide safe passage; it built a pathway to accessibility, security, and relief. The financial strain of costly deck repairs used to weigh heavily on Jose. The expense of the repairs was daunting; but Jose also knew that the cost of foregoing them was also steep. Continuing to live without a quick and safe way to enter and exit his house was a risk he couldn’t afford.
Because of Habitat and supporters like you, Jose no longer has to put on his prosthetic just to step outside. Now he can go out, soak in the sun, and breathe fresh air without the physical and mental strain that once made simple moments so difficult. Before, preparing to go outside was a long and draining process, but now Lucy just leads the way. Lucy, his loyal dog, is his motivation and his constant companion. “She’s the reason I get up every day,” Jose says with a smile.
Thanks in part to your partnership, something as simple as entering and exiting Jose’s home is now stress free. This ramp is more than accessibility: it is dignity, independence, and a reminder that even small changes can open the door to a new way of living.
When you support Habitat Catawba Valley, you do so much more than repair homes – you restore dignity and rebuild community.
As Catawba County’s only full-time fully staffed repair program, Habitat Repairs provides a critical lifeline. Habitat provides the assistance – and the hope – people need to continue living securely and independently in their own home.
Last fiscal year, Habitat Repairs served 93 individuals and repaired 24 homes. During our 10-year history, Habitat Repairs has empowered 423 individuals and preserved 228 homes. Together, we have built a decade of resiliency.
