The Habitat Repairs! Program partners with volunteers, subcontractors, donors, churches, homeowners, families, and individuals to provide critical repairs and weatherization affordably to Catawba County homeowners in need.
Due to the nature of the program, Habitat is unable to respond in an emergency situation, but staff are happy to provide information on other agencies that may be able to respond to repair needs faster than Habitat is able.
Services
Once you qualify, a site visit will be done by the construction manager to determine what projects Habitat will be able to do at your home. Services may vary based on need and availability of funds, but may include the following:
- Roof repair/replacement
- HVAC work
- Modifications for accessibility (ramps, etc.)
- Porch/Steps
- Weatherization
- Decks, steps, and handrails
- Plumbing
- Flooring (safety concerns only)
- Gutter repair and leaf guards
- Electrical work
*Habitat is unable to do the following types of repair work: mold issues, cosmetic flooring, and foundation/structural problems.
Habitat Repairs Income Guidelines
The following chart shows Habitat’s household income eligibility guidelines; there is no minimum income requirement. Habitat’s repair program does have a household maximum income guideline equivalent to 80% of the area median income for your household size. If you are in doubt about whether your income is close to the maximum, please contact staff at the number listed below.
Application Process
What types of repairs can Habitat’s program make on my home?
Services may vary based on need and availability of Habitat’s funding but may include the following: roof repair/ replacement, HVAC work, modifications for accessibility (ramps, etc.), weatherization, decks, steps, handrails, plumbing, flooring (safety concerns only), gutter repair and leaf guards, electrical work. Habitat is unable to do the following types of repair work: mold issues, cosmetic flooring, and foundation/structural problems.
How do I apply?
Habitat Repairs accepts applications during open application periods. The program holds application periods approximately 1-2 times per year. If applications are not available at the time that you contact Habitat, you can request that Habitat put you on the repair inquiry list. If you are on the repair inquiry list, you will be sent an application the next time an application period opens.
How much will the repairs cost?
Habitat asks that you make two payments toward the cost of your repairs. The first payment will be made before the work starts and the second payment will be made when the work is finished. Each payment will be equal to 10% of your gross monthly income.
Who qualifies for Habitat Catawba Valley’s repair program?
To be considered for acceptance, applicants must:
• be an owner of the property in Catawba County.
• have occupied the home for at least one year and intend to remain in the home long term.
• meet income guidelines. The maximum household income is equivalent to 80% of the area median income for your household size.
• not be in danger of foreclosure.
• not have a property tax value exceeding the HUD Existing Home sales price limit.
Can I move out or sell my home once it's been repaired?
Yes. However, because our program is designed to help people stay safe, warm, and dry in their homes, you will be asked to pay an additional percentage of Habitat’s repair costs on your home if you move or sell your home within 5 years of Habitat’s repairs.
Will you publicize information about my repair?
If you are comfortable sharing your story, we would love for you to pay it forward by sharing how the repairs have made a difference in your daily life. By sharing your journey, we can inspire and engage more people, creating a community of support and understanding that benefits everyone involved. It’s essential to our mission to not only preserve inspiring stories like yours but also to connect with others who share similar experiences. However, if this is not something you are comfortable doing, there is no obligation to do so.
I have a home that has critical repair needs, but I am currently renting it out. Would I be eligible?
No. Homes accepted for repairs through Habitat Catawba Valley must be owner-occupied. In some instances, an exception can be made if the home is occupied by a family member of the owner. Please reach out so we can refer you to other programs and assistance available in the area.
