Volunteer with Habitat
Whatever your skills or available time commitment, Habitat has a place for you to serve. Habitat Catawba Valley accepts volunteers year round for New Constructions, Habitat Repairs! and the ReStore. No experience is necessary, and we provide all necessary materials, tools, and trainings. However, volunteers must be scheduled in advance, so please be sure to register on our volunteer website! Habitat Catawba Valley is built on the four cornerstones of dignity, service, community, and stewardship. Please join us in creating a worksite that celebrates these values
For more information on particular types of volunteer opportunities, see descriptions below:
Our New Construction program accepts volunteers on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8:00 – 12:00. We are currently working in Northstone, our newest neighborhood, located at 3461 Falling Creek Rd, Hickory NC 28601. Volunteers should wear sturdy clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and closed-toed shoes.
Our Habitat Repairs! program accepts volunteers on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and occasional Saturdays from 8:30 – 12:30. We are currently serving families throughout Catawba County, so be sure and check the address listed on any repair events. Volunteers should wear sturdy clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and closed-toed shoes.
Volunteers are needed in Habitat's ReStore to help sort and price incoming donations, arrange displays, and run the cash register. Volunteers are needed Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday from 9:45 am – 5:00 pm and Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:45 – 7:00 pm. ReStore volunteers can work 4-hour shifts or the whole day, it’s up to you. Our greatest need is for those who can make a regular weekly commitment of 3-4 hours or more, but one-time or occasional volunteers are also needed.
Individual Construction Volunteers
Individuals make up the majority of our volunteers! Simply select an event on our volunteer calendar showing open slots available, and sign-up to get started! Interested in bringing a friend? Direct them to sign up for the same event. All of our sites accommodate between 5 and 12 volunteers, so you will never be alone. We also have skilled staff members leading every worksite, so no experience needed!
Groups are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Group sizes can range from 5-12 volunteers. Occasionally we may be able to accommodate up to 20 people depending on what type of work is available, but an ideal group size is no more than 12 people.
Youth Construction Volunteers
Because Habitat complies with OSHA safety regulations, we require certain age restrictions on our worksites. Our regular construction worksites are open to volunteers 16 and over; however, youth 16-17 years of age cannot operate power tools or work at heights of more than 6 ft off the ground. We are able to accept youth 14 and 15 years of age on non-active construction sites; this includes projects such as painting, landscaping, etc. If you are interested in scheduling youth 14-15 years of age, contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 828-328-4663 (ext. 315). Please note that youth approved projects are dependent upon the availability of our building schedule, and require advanced planning. All minors must be accompanied by an adult and must have a parent/guardian fill out a Waiver of Liability and a Minors Permission Form to be allowed to work on site.
Habitat currently offers Team Building days for businesses looking for a way to give back to the community while improving morale and learning new skills. Team Building days are scheduled a month or two in advance on any day Wednesday-Saturday. Click here to learn more.
