Construction PDF Print E-mail

Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley typically builds neighborhoods of homes, which makes construction more efficient by keeping activity in one place.  Nearly all aspects of construction are done by volunteers--from framing and roofing to sheetrocking and painting.  Subcontractors are used for masonry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work.  All Habitat houses are held to the same standards as any other residential construction, meaning all work is permitted and inspected according to local building code.  We also have licensed contractors on staff, as well as Americorps construction crew leaders who help train and lead volunteers.

Many people are surprised to learn that Habitat homes in Catawba County are extremely energy-efficient.  HfH-CV partners with Advanced Energy in order to ensure that our homeowners have average electric bills of $25-$30 per month.  This is accomplished by using extra insulation in the walls, attic, and crawlspace (if applicable), using Energy Star appliances and compact fluorescent lightbulbs, and having an ultra-efficient HVAC system.

HfH-CV has been a pioneer in adopting greenbuilding techniques.  In 2005, we built the state's first 'Zero Energy House,' which incorporates solar panels, a solar hot water heater, passive solar heating, and a geothermal system.  In 2007, we were chosen as one of three Habitat affiliates to build the winning design in the NC Sustainable Building Design Competition.
